Paintings sculptures & object - art from the Netherlands - Biography As far as I can remember, I was always making something, or tinkering with things to make something out of them; actually that is something innate to me, says Fred van de Siepkamp Frederik Jouke van de Siepkamp was born on 17 March 1954 in Voorburg and grew up in a wooded area, which looked very rural at that time, with its many stately country houses and farmlands around the old city centre. Voorburg, situated on the Vliet, existed already during Roman times more than two thousand years ago. During that time, it was a fortified town for the Roman garrison. The canal De Vliet was dug under the supervision of the Roman garrison commander and was called for a long time the Corbulo canal. It was a connecting canal between the Rhine and the Meuse rivers enabling ships to sail out and circulate in both directions, even with unfavourable winds. Since then, Voorburg has - like the rest of The Netherlands - undergone many changes. The urbanisation is increasingly oppressing the remnant nature and the cities grow more and more end-to-end. This is why we talk nowadays of 'green areas' or 'green belts'. I think that this has determined for a great part my artistical functioning as well as my subjects, adds Fred van de Siepkamp. There's only space left above our heads!
